An injured stuntman recuperating in a hospital befriends a sick young girl and weaves an elaborate fable for her entertainment.
Director Tasrem Singh was born in India, and studied at Pasadena's Art Center. Beginning his career making music videos, most notably for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion", which won six MTV awards including Best Director and Video Of The Year. Singh also made big budget commercials for companies like Nike and Coca-Cola. His first feature film, The Cell, a nightmarish thriller starring Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn, came out in 2000.
Singh spent over four years on his follow-up picture, funded primarily with his own money. The Fall was shot in over 20 countries on 4 continents in notable geographic and architectural locations, including Haipur, South Africa, India, Argentina, Turkey, Bali, and Fiji.
The cast is headed by Lee Pace, known best for his work on television's Pushing Daisies. Co-starring is the Romanian discovery Catinca Untaru, who had no previous acting experience. Pace was confined to his bed for a portion of the shoot to better convince the young girl of his condition.
The elaborate costumes were designed by Eiko Ishikoa, an Oscar-winner for her work on Bram Stoker's Dracula. The bold, often surreal visuals are strictly photography only and do not feature computer animated effects.
The film was released to fairly positive reviews, all praising the look of the film. The cinematography by Colin Watkinson received a handful of year-end notices.
