Two children are chased by a murderous relative through rural Georgia.
David Gordon Green is a graduate of North Carolina School Of The Arts whose debut film George Washington earned rave reviews and comparisons to director Terrence Malick for its poetic style, and the melding of the mythic and the naturalistic.
Green's third film (appropriately produced by Malick) is his cautious entry into genre territory, though the thriller aspects of the story do not prevent him from highlighting the meanderings and fancies of its young main characters, a distinct twist on what would ordinarily be classified as "Southern Gothic".
Working with known actors for the first time, Green pulled exemplary performances from his child actors Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) and Devon Allen, as well as the more experienced adults Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama) and Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding). Kristen Stewart is also featured in one of her early roles.
The film was shot on location in Georgia (mostly around Savannah) by Tim Orr, who has been behind the camera for all of Green's productions. The musical score is by legendary composer Philip Glass.
Many reviewers saw shades of the classic thriller Night Of The Hunter, and Green also pointed to works by Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, The Brothers Grimm, and Truman Capote's In Cold Blood as influences on the picture.
