A just-paroled cat burglar is blackmailed into tracking down a lost invention of Leonardo DaVinci.
After his breakout success in the television show Moonlighting, actor Bruce Willis proved his big screen worth in the box office hit Die Hard. Attempting to blend the two worlds, he concocted a story which would play to both his comedic and action skills. The screenwriters of Die Hard and black satire Heathers collaborated on the script, with the latter film's director Michael Lehmann joining the project.
The film was shot on location in places including Niagara Falls, New York City, London, Rome, Budapest, and Los Angeles. The budget of $70 million was extremely high for the time, especially for a non-effects-driven production.
Joining Willis in the cast are Danny Aiello Do The Right Thing, comedian Sandra Bernhard, James Coburn, Andie McDowell (Four Weddings And A Funeral), and Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I).
Mis-marketed as an action film, Hudson Hawk was savaged by critics, and failed to make even a third of its budget back in its U.S. release. It has since become a cult favorite, with fans admiring its modern update of classic screwball comedy and anything-goes inventiveness.
Running time is approx. 100 minutes.
