After the sudden death of her boyfriend, a young woman goes on a journey of self-discovery that leads to the drug-fueled party scene of Ibiza.
Lynne Ramsay is a Scottish filmmaker who won multiple awards for her shorts work before her acclaimed debut feature Ratcatcher in 1999 also garnered international festival notices. Her second film, Morvern Callar, was adapted from the acclaimed Scottish novel of the same name by Alan Warner.
Ramsay's adaptation takes a 180º turn from novelistic storytelling, relying mainly on its images and the internalized lead performance of Samantha Morton (an Oscar-nominee for Woody Allen's Sweet & Lowdown) to convey its themes and emotions.
A modern soundtrack was compiled for the film, with artists mentioned in the novel itself. Selections include works from Can, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Stereolab.
Both Morton and her co-star McDermott received awards for their work in the film, and the official Cannes screening resulted in two additional notices.
Running time is approximately 90 min.
