A young man falls for the girlfriend of an older criminal he's working for.
Leos Carax is a member of the "Cinema du Look" movement along with fellow filmmakers Luc Besson and Jean-Jacques Beineix, a name given to youth-driven, highly-stylistic productions beginning in the mid 1980's. While originally meant as a dirisive term, these writer-directors carved out a distinct thematic ground that in addition to their aesthetics separated them from a relatively tepid period in French cinema.
Bad Blood ("Mauvais Sang") reteams Carax with the lead actor of his debut feature Boy Meets Girl, Denis Lavant. Also starring is French New Wave veteran Michel Piccoli, and an early breakout performances by Juliette Binoche and Julie Delpy.
Also working with Carax again is cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier, who gives the film's bold color scheme a distinctive pop.
The film was a critical and financial success, and earned Caesar nominations for Binoche, Delpy, and Escoffier. It also gave Carax the clout to realize his next film, the highly ambitious The Lovers On The Bridge (again with Lavant and Binoche).
