The town of Northfork, Montana is being evacuated to make way for the construction of a dam, and some of its residents resist the move.
Mark and Michael Polish are filmmaking siblings who came onto the scene in 1999 with their successful debut film Twin Falls Idaho, about a pair of conjoined twins (played by the brothers themselves). Northfork is the third work in what is considered to be an unconnected trilogy of films set in the American heartland.
Northfork shows the brothers working with more ambitious material, including a period setting (the mid 1950's) and a larger cast, in addition to mythological elements. Their first film drew comparisons to the work of David Lynch, and they appear to be wading in similar waters here as well, with echoes of Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks found in the eccentric small town characters.
The cast includes James Woods, Nick Nolte, Daryl Hannah, Anthony Edwards, Peter Coyote, Kyle McLachlan and Mark Polish.
The film was released to mixed reviews, but its supporters celebrated its originality and dreamlike visual scheme.
Running time is approx. 100 minutes.
