Fritz Lang was one of the most popular and innovative directors of early German cinema, and after dabbling in the suspense, adventure, crime, and fantasy genres, he produced the science fiction epic Metropolis, the most expensive silent film ever made, a landmark breakthrough in design and effects, and now regarded as one of the most influential films of all time.
Heavily edited after its premiere, the film has not been seen as intended since the late 1920's. Various restorations have been made over the years, but in 2008 a version approximating the original cut was found in Argentina.
