A filmmaker interviews a reclusive screen legend for a documentary he's making, releasing a flood of memories about the actress' life on and off-camera.
Illustrator-turned-animator Satoshi Kon is one of the leading lights of current Japanese cinema, with four films and a television series to his credit since his debut feature, Perfect Blue, in 1998. He is a current member of the Madhouse animation studio, which is responsible for many noteworthy anime titles over the last 30 years.
Most of Kon's work deals with the blurred line between fantasy and reality, as well as subjective memory, and he's explored this concept in a psychological thriller, a science fiction actioner, as well as the "fictional biopic" approach with Millennium Actress.
While ostensibly a story about one woman's experience, Millennium Actress also has two historical facets: the viewer is not only given a tour of various periods and styles of Japanese filmmaking in the 20th century, but through these "films within the film" are also shown portraits of the country's cultural and political past.
Millennium Actress went on to win various festival awards and acclaim in the animation community, and is now regarded as a landmark work in the field.
