Combine a French comic book set in the American Old West with a Dutch director and an international cast, throw in some psychedelic drugs, and you get Blueberry, a genre-bending treasure hunt adventure with a mystical twist.
A U.S. Marshall (played by the popular French actor Vincent Cassel), struggling to maintain peace between white men and Native Americans (whom he lived with for many years, adapting their way of life), comes up against a nefarious criminal (Michael Madsen) with connections to his past.
Blueberry was adapted from a comic series that began in 1963 and is still being published today, a creation of legendary artist Jean Giraud (known professionally by the name Möebius) and writer Jean-Michel Charlier. Director Jan Kounen made his name with the visually ambitious action/crime film Dobermann (also starring Cassel), and when working on Blueberry included new material inspired by his own experiences with Shamanistic rituals in South America.
Film was shot primarily in Mexico, and also stars Juliette Lewis, her father Geoffrey Lewis, Eddie Izzard, Djimon Hounsou, Ernest Borgnine, and Temuera Morrison,
While the film received mixed reviews due to its lack of faithfulness to the source material, many hailed it as a original and visionary take on the Western genre, drawing comparison to the work of director Alejandro Jodorowsky (who coincidentally had collaborated on comics with Giraud).
Blueberry runs approximately 2 hours.
