A gangland murder and the resulting police investigation pulls back the curtain on the life of crack dealers in Brooklyn, in this film starring Mekhi Phifer, Harvey Keitel, John Turturro, Delroy Lindo, and Isaiah Washington.
Clockers is a grittier, more realistic film than the seven films Spike Lee made preceding it, reigning in his more hyperbolic imagery for a down-to-earth, almost documentary style. Originally set to be directed by Martin Scorsese (with Robert De Niro starring), Lee came on board when he sensed an opportunity to react to the slew of urban gang films released in the early 90's and criticize the glamorization of violence.
The source material is a heavily researched novel by Richard Price, and was a major influence on David Simon, creator of The Corner and The Wire (both about similar subject matter). Price would ironically wind up as a staff writer on the latter show. Lee's adaptation of the novel (the screenplay also co-credited to Price) changes the focus of the narrative to the dealer played by Phifer.
